Getting Ready to Participate

LWoman preparing to participate in online meetingIncreasingly meetings and workshops are becoming virtual in nature. Because of this, it is now common to see meetings take place over the web. And also for remote workers to participate online and work together to develop winning outcomes.

These events now take place in a wide variety of different technical environments. Most of these try to make it easy and intuitive to participate. However, for many people, online meetings still feel a bit alien. And that can undermine how they work.

For online meetings to work well, and for us to participate well within them, does require that we master some basic skills. And so the purpose of this section is to help you to familiarise yourself with some of the tools you might be using. Doing this prior to a meeting or workshop will enable you to respond to requests to participate more easily.

The range of available tools is continuously growing. And the tools themselves are evolving all the time. Because of this, this section will link you to the resources provided by the tool developers.
Initially we will focus on the most popular. But you may wish to propose further tools to be included. Or you might notice that what we have has been superseded. In either case, please let us know and we will update this resource.

Understanding, and being able to use the features of a particular tool is only part of being able to participate effectively. We would therefore recommend that, if you have not already done so, you look through our article:  “Technical Preparation for Joining in a High Participation Virtual Meeting or Workshop
