RACI Chart

RACI is an acronym for: Responsible; Accountable; Consulted; and Informed – four different levels of involvement that an individual might have with a particular area of responsibility.

The RACI chart is a matrix between individuals (normally defined in terms of their roles, and mapped along the top of the matrix) and different business entities (processes, facilities, etc. mapped down the left hand side).
Each intersection is then populated with one of the letters R, A, C or I (or left blank), depending on the involvement required.
The tool is a useful way to identify and clarify responsibilities for ensuring things remain in control, and has a number of different variations which can be found in Wikipedia
The Wikipedia article also has a simple way of describing the different levels of involvement as follows:
  • Responsible: The doer
  • Accountable: Where ‘the buck’ stops
  • Consulted: In the loop
  • Informed: Kept in the picture
Some people also include Q to indicate responsibility for reviewing the resulting quality of any action taken.
